Resource Action Group, (RAG)

Our Vision:
To place South Africa’s youth on the world map!

Our Mission:
To empower individual youth as well as build the capacity of youth development organisations to enable them to take control of their own destinies and to become agents for social change. This can be achieved by providing skills training, support and networking.

Our Objectives:
RAG has identified the following needs within the participants and its programmes seek to address these needs:
- Employment;
- Financial independence;
- Child care;
- Transport;
- Support after training;
- Computer literacy training;
- Life skills training; and
- Work experience.

The Programs we offer:
- Operation Hope Skills Training Programme
The objective of this programme is to empower marginalised people in material and life skills to access the job market and in order to secure or create gainful employment. The course runs for 8 weeks, and offers computer literacy, professional job seeking skills and basic bookkeeping and office skills, personal development and self-management, HIV/AIDS and sexuality.

- Rural Training Programme
Training of young people in management skills, for the running of organisations in rural areas.

- Community Outreach Programme
This programme focuses on individuals in NGOs and CBOs who lack the financial means to access our training programmes. They are trained at reduced fees. They are recommended to RAG by the relevant organisation with a plan to plough back in to the community they come from. - Youth Express
Youth Express is RAG’s primary tool to advocate for an assets based approach to youth development. It also serves to promote the work of RAG’s network partners. Volunteers are trained as community journalists. They are directly involved in building partnerships with other youth development organisations and assist with the distributon of the Youth Express after its quarterly publication.

- International Youth Voices
International youth Voices is a youth project operating across South Africa and the UK. It will give young people between the ages of 16 and 21 the opportunity to write on issues that affects them. A panel of judges will select what they consider to be the most suitable entries. It will be published in a book and distributed in both countries. Workshops on the book includes: Discrimination, poverty, crime, culture, education and aspirations are taking place at key locations in various regions.

- Civic Activism Youth Project (CAYP)
CAYP was established after the YDN expressed concern for the need for youth to become active in their communities. RAG was identified as one of three YDN partner organisations that would initiate a three-year project aimed at engaging youngsters in civic activities.

- Womens Support Group
The aim of this programme, managed by women, is to empower women by building their capacity ad creating opportunities for gainful employment and volunteer placements. Its flagship project is a laundry project launched in November 1999. The aim is to provide a self-sustainable service to working women in our operational area. Other initiatives include a training programme for young women in project management and gender awareness. Participants also have access to all the RAG training programmes.

What we have already achieved:
- RAG were pioneers of the establishment of the African Youth Parliament;
- RAG is a member of the International Youth Parliament;
- The work of the organisation has been featured in five documentaries on national television.
- A total of 14 computer training centres has been initiated by individuals in rural and urban areas after receiving training through the ‘train the trainer’ programme, giving evidence of the replicability of the RAG model.
