School Leavers Opportunity Training, (SLOT)

Our Mission:
To guide educationally deprived and unemployed out-of-school youth in order to improve their opportunities for gainful employment or self-employment.

Our Objectives:
- To place carefully selected students in appropriate life skills and training courses, with necessary financial assistance for tuition and accommodation
- To develop, own and publish appropriate curricula to enable SLOT to achieve its mission statement
- To provide post-training support for students
- To raise and generate the necessary finance that will enable SLOT to achieve its mission statement
- To involve parents and targeted communities in the vision of SLOT
- To build effective networks with other organisations with similar aims and philosophies.

The Programs we offer:
Four phases of slot

Phase one
This is an eleven-day residential course in fundamental Life Skills. Forty to sixty students are trained in four modules by four contracted trainer viz. communications, basic orientation, self-awareness, career and work planning.

Phase two
This is a vocational course of up to one year. SLOT co-operates with selected practical training course providers and as such, out-sources this level of training. At the end of phase one, each student selects a training course in consultation with the training facilitators and training manager.

Phase three
At the end of vocational skills training, each student has decided whether to pursue self-employment or formal employment and phase three consists of providing an intensive three-week course in Advanced Business Skills. By the end of the course, students have a personal Marketing plan for those seeking employment, and a Business plan for those seeking to initiate a micro-enterprise.

Phase four
This consists of post-training opportunities and support. For students seeking employment, SLOT offers real work experience in the form of an internship of up to three months. Students are placed with companies that offer work experience according to the skills they have been trained in.

For students that will start a micro-business, SLOT offers one-on-one business consultancy leading to a successful loan application and business start up. Ongoing support in tendering, quoting and bookkeeping is a precondition for our continued support.

What we have already achieved:

- Had an employee chosen as “Ma Africa” in the African Continent Competition recognising and rewarding work done in the culture upliftment within communities.
- Was a founder member of both the YDN and Indlovu partnerships.
- Piloted a variety of differing projects ranging from the successful River Ranger programme to Learnership models for J.E.P.
- Set up an innovative programme in the Eastern Cape for students wanting to enter the hospitality field.
